History of The Alameda Community Chorus

Back in late 1981, an idea was forming in the minds of two very special Alameda citizens. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful,” they said, “to have a chorus in Alameda to perform at special functions and city events?” These two people, Bonnie Horlbeck and Charles Rhode, continued to formulate their plan. Then in 1982, it came to fruition, and the Alameda Oratorio Society was created.

The purpose of the Society was to benefit the community of Alameda, and to encourage Alameda residents to participate in the performance of choral compositions. At first, the chorus was under the direction of Al Price, and performed with the Alameda Mozart Festival, in which a celebration of Mozart’s birthday took place with presentations of his glorious music.

After three years, the chorus came under the jurisdiction of the Alameda Adult School, and has been a regular class since 1985. The Alameda Community Chorus, as it became known, performs at least two concerts per year, one in December with the Alameda Community Band, and one concert in the spring. In addition, they will perform for various clubs or other groups when asked.

At the end of the school year 2000-2001, Bonnie Horlbeck decided to take her much deserved retirement. In addition to having directed the Alameda Community Chorus for 19 years, she still volunteered at Alameda Hospital, taught private voice lessons, and was musical director for many high school and community theater musical plays, and, until June of 2001, was Music Director of the First Presbyterian Church.

Following Bonnie’s excellent lead, the chorus was fortunate to have Nyla Barrett as director for two years. Her fresh approach, enthusiasm, and sheer joy are readily apparent whether she is teaching a class or directing a concert performance. She truly enjoyed conducting the chorus.

Our wonderful accompanist is Starr Brown, who has been playing for the chorus for several years. We are blessed to have someone as dedicated, versatile, and professional as Starr.

Next was Carole Vetter, who is the music director of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a very accomplished musician. Carol also performs regularly with Cantare Con Vivo. She brings out the best in the chorus with her extensive knowledge of vocal technique and repertoire. No matter what style of song, Carol always knows how it should be performed. The chorus members appreciate all the extra hours Carole contributes, above and beyond the classroom setting each week.

Our current music director is Kathryn Neale. She is and accomplished Soprano and Cellist. She also teaches voice and the visually impaired.

The current enrollment is approximately 35-40 members, and there is always room for more. Individuals who wish to join may sign up through the Alameda Adult School office. There are no auditions, and the ability to read music is not required. If you like to sing, come and join us.

Individuals who may wish to support the Alameda Community Chorus in its ongoing efforts to provide quality local performances may contact the Alameda Adult School office for further information.
