Welcome to one of the most active departments at Encinal High School. The Encinal band, directed for 22 years by Armen Phelps, is known around the state of California and as far away as British Columbia and Hawaii as a top quality musical organization. The music department includes our Jazz Band, Guitar Class, Symphonic Marching Band, Guard Units and our newest addition, the Orchestra. Every group in the music family at Encinal is important.

Our music programs have earned over 195 prestigious awards over the last few years. We compete at a local and state level in various competitions ranging from marching band reviews to percussion ensembles to jazz. All students participate and support each other throughout each event. Our music program is designed to offer a quality music education, especially when it comes to a higher education. Band students in general are accepted to a college or university 40% more than non-band students. Past Encinal Band students have attended many of the most prestigious colleges and universities. Some of the more notable ones are University of California at Davis and Berkeley, TCU, University of Oregon, Stanford, Harvard and Yale.

Throughout the rest of this site, you will be informed of classroom, student and parent expectations, volunteer requirements and monetary requirements for each musician. Grading policies, dress codes and performance conduct will be covered for each music group. I sincerely feel that all music students are special. They have learned a mode with which to express their feelings and emotions in a beautiful way. They work very hard to master their voices and instruments, both individually and as a group, and really thrive on the support they receive from families, friends and teachers. After you have spent hours listening to your child practice, you will be amazed to hear the finished product. We absolutely want all families to come to all musical performances.

We look forward to all of us working together to make this a successful year.
